Things to do and places to go

Well dressings are one of Derbyshire’s best known customs and date back hundreds of years. During the summer months well dressings are celebrated in many towns and villages Tideswells annual week long well dressings are usually during the last week of June.

Tideswell is a convenient centre for walks in this area of the Peak District. Millers Dale Tideswell Dale, Monks Dale and Tansley Dale are all within walking distance of Woodhouse Cottage.

Chatsworth House

Is the splendid home of the 12^th Duke and Duchess of Devonshire. The farm shop is fantastic as are the gardens, adventure playground and animal farm.  Recently the film ‘The Duchess’ was filmed here.

Hardwick Hall

The house stands within a country park containing rare breeds of cattle and sheep.  The house is one of Britain’s finest Elizabethan houses built for Elizabeth Dowager countess of Shrewsbury.

The home of the Manners family in Derbyshire is one of the finest medieval and Tudor houses in England. Includes an online tour and family history.

Eyam – 4 miles

Eyam is one of the best-preserved villages in the vicinity and is the famous 'plague village', which went into voluntary quarantine when the plague was imported from London in 1665. Above the village lies Eyam Moor which is a fine area for walking, with good views across the Derwent valley and many Bronze Age remains and monuments.

A beautiful market town, famous for its bakewell pudding, traditional and farmers markets. The farmers market is on the last Saturday of the month 9am – 2pm.

Castleton – 10 miles

Has four underground caves, Speedwell Cavern, Blue John Cavern, Treak Cliff Cavern and the Devils Arse! (really!!) all worth a visit. Overlooking Castleton is the ancient Peveril Castle.
